The Power of a Calm Heart Through compassionate connection we can alleviate distress and be more present as a parent. The chaos of parenting can leave us feeling emotionally drained and disconnected. By being intentional with our presence, we can quiet the noise and connect with ourselves first, leaving room for meaningful connections with our children. With a calm heart, we can be present and connective.
Postpartum Support Helping mom in the 4th trimester. The 4th trimester is defined by Dr. Harvey Karp (2002) as the three months immediately following the birth of a baby. The last two decades have fortunately brought great attention to ensuring baby transitions to life outside the womb during these few months. But what about mom’s transition during this final trimester? The combination of hormone fluctuations, lack of sleep, and caring for a baby full-time can be a very difficult time for caregivers. The isolation from social support networks can make this 4th trimester feel even more distressing. Many moms find themselves feeling guilty or ashamed that they cannot find more happiness during this time.
It is through connection that relief can begin. A great first step is simply creating the space for a mom to process the wide range of emotions during the 4th trimester. This exploration can offer a greater connection to self, which in turn helps foster a greater connection to baby, a partner, and other children.
For nearly 1 in 4 moms, the 4th trimester may mark even deeper distress. Recognizing postpartum depression and anxiety early can prevent unnecessary suffering. There are various ways a mental health care professional can help, starting with compassionate understanding. Therapeutic groups may also bring relief by offering moms connection through shared experiences. Help is in reach!
